Music recommendation/ streaming music

  • Songbirdnest Open source music player. Built on firefox. Plays all formats.
  • Liveplasma Pros: Fun to surf around and discover new artists; easy and quick navigation. Cons: Small library of artists; recommendations can be a bit crowded and off-target; no media or community.
  • MusicStrands Large music library of song previews, a useful media player that feeds recommendations to you on the spot, and a community to find like-minded music fans. It also has a separate category of "Indy Artists" where you can find plenty of unsigned artists who are sharing their music.
  • Upto11.net Although it doesn't offer media or special jazzy features as other sites, the concept is very simple: Come here for music recommendations and publish what you like.
  • Audiri is just as important to the artist as it is to the person looking for music. Latin for to be heard, Audiri is like an on-demand, coffee shop Web site, full of talented artists you've never heard of.
  • Pandora With 1.8 million members already plugged into their advanced streaming service, Pandora is without a doubt a heavyweight contender in this challenging industry. It provides streaming audio of full songs.
  • Mercora acts and looks like a P2P file sharing application, and you won't get busted for using it. Users stream their music, not download it, over a network with more than one million listeners. The concept is great, and sounds familiar to those who broadcast their iTunes playlist over a small network. It is a P2P music streaming service that lets you listen to full songs on-demand.
  • Yahoo LAUNCHcast Radio is another user-controlled streaming radio service that users can customize by rating songs that currently play. Since Yahoo is already a huge company, its library of artists and songs is gigantic. One caveat worth mentioning is that Yahoo is heavily pushing for its users to subscribe (pay) for an upgraded service. This means that the free service we reviewed placed radio ads between songs, graphic advertisements on the player itself, and played songs at low/medium sound quality.
  • Last.fm wasn't built in a day. Started in 2002, Last.fm has exploded, fostering one of the largest social networking sites for discovering new music and providing its listeners with music of all types.
  • Indy Music discovery program that learns what you like, and plays more of it. (Needs Download)
  • Last.fm Online music profile that you can fill up with the music you like. This

African Music

  • Oumou Sangare was born in 1968 in Bamako, the capital of Mali, her family, though, was from Wassoulou, in the southwestern region of Mali. Sangare is the leading female star of the Wassoulou sound which is based on an ancient tradition of hunting rituals mixed with songs about devotion, praise, and harvest played with pentatonic (five-note) melodies. Wassoulou is typified by a strong Arabic feel along with the sound of the scraping karinyang, women play the fle, a calabash strung with cowrie shells, which they spin and throw into the air in time to the music.
  • N'Faly Kouyaté/ Dunyakan - Wawa
  • Lokua Kanza was born in Bukavu, in the Congo Democratic Republic, (ex-Zaire. He went to Paris in 1984 and quickly mingled with the African music community. Even before his first album came out, Lokua Kanza's notoriety had spread well beyond the already wide circle of African music spheres. His soft, melancholy acoustic music has swept away the current clichés regarding ex-Zaire music, with its rumba and diabolical Soukouss rhythms. Lokua Kanza is a musician of multiple talents, a singer, composer or arranger as required. As for his undeniable artistic feeling, it has attracted artists from many different horizons, from Youssou N'Dour to Patrick Bruel. With Ismaël Lô, Baaba Maal or Geoffrey Oryema, he has brilliantly ensured the renewal of African music.
  • The Mighty Zulu Nation have captured audiences from Belgrade to Sweden and Bristol to Belgium for the past two years, with both solo and collaborative efforts with Fun-da-mental. Nation Records, who have lead the way in the Global Fusion scene for years, have always wanted to produce a focused African album with music that was created rather than sampled. The time has come: the Nation Records has been drawn out of hibernation to present the debut album from The Mighty Zulu Nation, a traditional Zulu choir from Durban, South Africa.

European Music

  • Zap Mama started out as a female a-capella group around 'leading lady' Marie Daulne. fansite
  • Widely hailed as the heir to "Fadista" legend Amália Rodrigues,  Mariza has been taking  listeners breath away with her remarkable voice and astonishing performances.
  • Tania Maria Jazz, French
  • Kayah/ Goran Bregovic - Spij Kochane Spij Very good, I have heard it before in Luxembourg Two superstars of the former eastern bloc have come together to produce this fine album of modern eastern European dance music. The songs on this album feature the familiar trademark instrumentation and arrangements of Goran Bregovic (he wrote & recorded the soundtrack of the underground hit film ‘Time of the Gypsies’) – brass bands and local instrumentation stand out in the driving western-style rhythms of songs such as ‘Spij Kochane spij’. Kayah has a voice of great strength capable of climbing to dizzying heights whilst having the ability to reach the rounded, lower notes in the scale with apparent ease. Her fame is more home-based than Bregovic’ but it’s my guess that this album will bring her to the forefront of popular European music.

Latin American Music

  • Lisandro Meza played an important role in the evolution of Cumbia, the traditional big band dance music of Colombia. A master of vallenato sabanero, an accordion-driven style of music that originated in Mexico, Meza forged a sound that has been described as "a cross between rural Dominican merengue, Louisiana zydeco, and Tex-Mex norteño." Meza initially attracted attention as a founding member of Los Corraleros de Majagual. One of Colombia's most popular bands in the 1960s, the group served as the breeding ground for such influential artists as Fruko, the "Godfather of Salsa."
  • Angélique Kidjo - Macumba
