I have travelled with nothing (my pack has been stolen) and with lots of gizmos (too much). It is difficult to give advice on how to strike a balance, but generally I think the "hold the pack with a straight arm out from your body for five seconds test" is useful. If you can do that, then the pack is not too heavy for you to lugg around.
